Lambertus Sancti Audomari canonicus, Liber Floridus

In the first half of the 12th century, a canon named Lambertus, from the current town of Sint-Omer in northern France, feared that knowledge would be lost to future generations. In his Liber Floridus, a medieval encyclopaedia, he tried to preserve as much of his predecessors’ works as possible. Lambertus arranged the subjects organically, not alphabetically. Ghent’s autograph copy, a listed Flemish Masterpiece, was written by the author himself. The text, covering cosmographic, biblical, historical and other subjects, is beautifully illustrated.
