Ghent University Library not only owns this, the final version of this manuscript, but also the copy on which it is based. If we put them side by side, we see that this version of the Monotessaron by Johannes Gerson is much larger, due in part to the larger script. Moreover, the glossa (commentary) was expanded at the request of the patron, the bibliophile abbot Raphael de Mercatellis. Finally, the volume contains a number of texts that we do not find in the preceding version: quotes from Church Fathers and medieval theologians, and life stories of a number of Biblical figures. (This work is part of a unique collection of magnificent manuscripts collected by Raphael de Mercatellis, son of the Burgundian duke Philip the Good and abbot of St Bavo’s Abbey in Ghent from 1578. It is one of the rare medieval manuscript collections that has been preserved as a whole and can be unequivocally attributed to its owner.) [Flandrica]
