Legend of Saint Margaret of Antioch (fragments)

Only scant traces and (often heavily-damaged) remnants of rhymed hagiographies in the vernacular from the 13th century survive. This fragment contains portions of such a saint’s life: that of Saint Margaret of Antioch, the daughter of a pagan priest who converted to Christianity, became a shepherdess and was martyred. The manuscript was originally a one-column booklet, a small and handy format. It can be deduced from the simple binding that the original manuscript only contained the legend of Margaret. Such surviving fragments illustrate the (re)use of parchment: these two double sheets were sewn together with two pieces of a scroll into a box, possibly a kind of case. [Flandrica]
